For Tier-1 OEM customers facing CSRD, California SB-261, and customer ESG reporting requirements, DitaiPlastic provides documented sustainability practices and carbon footprint data per part. This page outlines our approach across materials, energy, waste, social responsibility, and reporting standards.

Why Sustainability Matters in Thermoforming

Thermoforming has structural sustainability advantages over alternatives:

  • Lower energy than injection molding — about 30-40% less energy per part (lower processing temperatures and cycle times for some parts)
  • Lower tooling waste — aluminum tools recyclable; tooling lifespan 250K-1M cycles
  • Trim recycling — 100% of trim plastic can be recycled into next-generation sheet
  • Single-material parts — easier end-of-life recycling vs multi-material assemblies

Material Sustainability

Recycled Content (PCR — Post-Consumer Recycled)

  • HDPE PCR up to 100% — available for outdoor / industrial parts
  • ABS PCR up to 50% — available with cosmetic-acceptable color
  • PC/ABS PCR up to 30% — available for non-Class-A applications
  • HIPS PCR up to 30% — common for retail displays
  • PETG PCR up to 25% — food-contact grade requires virgin material currently

Cost premium: 5-15% over virgin material; trending toward parity by 2027 as PCR supply scales.

Bio-Based Materials

  • PLA (polylactic acid) — 100% bio-based; available for prototypes and short-run consumer products
  • Bio-PE (bio-based polyethylene) — partially bio-based, drop-in replacement for HDPE
  • PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) — 100% bio-based and biodegradable

Material Recyclability

Material Recycling Code End-of-Life Recyclability
HDPE 2 Excellent — widely accepted
PETG/PET 1 Excellent — widely accepted
PP 5 Good — accepted in many regions
PS/HIPS 6 Limited — fewer recycling streams
ABS 7 (Other) Limited — engineering plastic recyclers only
PC 7 (Other) Limited — specialty recyclers
PMMA 7 (Other) Mechanical recycling possible

Energy & Emissions

Renewable Energy

  • Solar capacity: 1.2 MW installed on factory rooftop (60% of factory roof area)
  • Renewable energy share: 28% of total electricity in 2025 (target 50% by 2027)
  • Grid mix: remaining 72% is China grid mix (~30% renewable)

Energy Efficiency Initiatives

  • LED lighting throughout factory (since 2022)
  • High-efficiency motors on production equipment (IE3 / IE4 standard)
  • Heat recovery from cooling systems pre-warms incoming air
  • Variable frequency drives (VFDs) on all major motors
  • Compressed air system audits annually
  • Process optimization reducing per-part energy 15% over 5 years

Carbon Footprint Per Part

Available on request for all major projects. Calculation methodology:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions (gas heating, fleet vehicles)
  • Scope 2: Purchased electricity (grid + solar offset)
  • Scope 3: Material extraction, freight, end-of-life (estimated)

Typical Scope 1+2 carbon footprint per part:

  • Small thin-gauge part (200×200mm × 1.5mm): ~0.08-0.12 kg CO2e
  • Medium part (1000×600mm × 4mm): ~1.2-1.8 kg CO2e
  • Large heavy-gauge (2400×1200mm × 6mm): ~6-9 kg CO2e

For comparison: equivalent injection-molded part typically 30-50% higher CO2 footprint due to higher processing temperatures.

Waste Reduction

Trim Recycling Program

  • 100% of trim plastic from production runs collected and processed
  • Sorted by material type and color for highest reuse value
  • Sold to recycling partners for re-extrusion into new sheet
  • Annual volume: ~80 tons/year of recovered material

Zero Hazardous Waste to Landfill (since 2023)

  • Cleaning solvents fully recycled or properly disposed via certified EHS partners
  • Mold release agents biodegradable formulations
  • Cooling water reclaimed and reused; minimal blowdown discharge

Packaging Sustainability

  • Cardboard boxes: 80%+ recycled content
  • Foam corner protection: recyclable EPE replacing EPS where possible
  • Pallet stretch wrap: minimum gauge for protection (reducing plastic waste)
  • Reusable plastic totes available for high-volume programs (5+ year service life)

Social Responsibility

Workforce Standards

  • 340 employees, all directly employed (not subcontracted)
  • Average tenure: 6.4 years (significantly above industry average)
  • Training hours per employee: 28 hours/year average
  • Health insurance, social security, housing fund — standard for all employees
  • Average wage 35% above local manufacturing minimum
  • Zero forced labor; zero child labor (audited annually)

Health & Safety

  • ISO 45001 readiness (certification target Q4 2026)
  • Lost-time injury rate: 0.42 per 100 workers (industry average ~1.5)
  • Annual safety training mandatory for all employees
  • Personal protective equipment provided and replaced regularly
  • Air quality monitoring at production stations

Community Engagement

  • Local technical school internship program (12 students/year)
  • Annual donations to local environmental cleanup
  • Disaster relief contributions (verified)

Reporting & Compliance

Standards We Support

  • EU CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) — provide Scope 1, 2, 3 emissions data per customer request for their consolidation
  • California SB-261 (Climate-Related Financial Risk Disclosure) — provide carbon footprint per shipment
  • SEC Climate Disclosure — Scope 3 supplier data available
  • EcoVadis assessment — willing to participate; current score on request
  • CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) — supplier-tier disclosure available
  • ISO 14001 readiness — environmental management system documented (certification target Q3 2026)

Sustainability FAQ

Can you provide a verified carbon footprint per shipment?

Yes — calculation methodology aligned with ISO 14064. Verification by third-party available for major programs (cost: $2K-5K depending on scope). Standard data without third-party verification is provided at no charge.

What’s the price premium for using PCR material?

5-15% over virgin material currently, depending on PCR percentage and grade. Trending toward parity by 2027. For most programs, customer absorbs this cost as the price of meeting their ESG commitments.

Do you support carbon offset purchases?

We do not arrange carbon offsets directly. We provide accurate carbon data so customers can offset themselves through certified registries (Verra, Gold Standard).

How does your sustainability compare to US/EU thermoformers?

Honest answer: US/EU thermoformers typically have lower per-part energy from cleaner electricity grids. Our advantage is documentation rigor, transparency, and willingness to participate in customer ESG programs. For customers prioritizing absolute carbon footprint over cost, US/EU may have a small advantage; for ESG transparency and reporting compliance, we are competitive.

Are you CDP-rated?

Currently participating in CDP supplier-tier disclosure. Public rating expected late 2026. Customer-specific data available immediately.
